BASEM & FSEM Consultation Report and Next Steps

Over the past several months, we have been engaged in discussions with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) regarding the future of both our organisations. Particularly, we have been exploring the potential for dissolving both organisations and re-forming as a College of SEM.

A total of 8 working groups were formed to discuss all aspects of a potential joint organisation, including the option of remaining separate. We are pleased to share the report, which contains a detailed summary of those discussions.

As you will see from the report, the boards of both BASEM and FSEM recommend to our members that we begin the necessary process to dissolve both BASEM and FSEM and create a new organisation.

Next Steps

Whilst the boards of both BASEM and FSEM have agreed that this course of action is desirable, the final decision will be made by you, our members and fellows. To that end, both organisations will now vote on whether to continue to pursue the goal of re-forming as a new organisation.

You will first have an opportunity to ask questions about this process, which will be answered at our live joint Q & A event on 16th May 2023. External marketing company Muckle Media will be collating these questions ahead of the live event.

Following the Q & A session, you will be asked to vote. Votes for each organisation will be held on 18th May at consecutive general meetings. Registration information to attend both the Q&A and general meeting will be shared in April. Please note that members of both organisations will be eligible to attend and vote at both FSEM and BASEM meetings.

Regardless of outcome, this vote marks a significant moment in the history of both organisations and of sport, exercise and musculoskeletal medicine as a whole. We would urge all members and fellows to take the time to read and digest the report, ask questions, and then to vote as you see fit.
